Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder. An individual who has been diagnosed with autism likely experienced an event that took place before, during, or after birth that affected brain growth and function when a brain is damaged, the individual can have a variety of symptoms. For children diagnosed with autism, sustained brain damage can often lead to symptoms such as poor speech development, hyperactivity, sensory hypersensitivity, disorganization, anxiety, poor gross and fine motor skills, and poor depth perception.

Children with a diagnosis of autism are not hopeless. In fact, they have shown great potential for improvement with a home-based helpful program of stimulation and activity that improves the child's development. Nearly all children improve on a home program, and their symptoms reduce, and at times, disappear. Some children graduate from the Doman International program and join their well peers in school.
